The Knit Affair Limited established Kapa Haka Makers in 2003 when the call for knitted kapa haka kākahu came knocking
In 2023 Brendon and Hayley Brownie purchased the business bringing renewed passion for the art.
They’re driven by the pride they feel, knowing their mahi helps support the cultural heritage of kapa haka and the community they serve.

GET IN EARLY
We encourage you to allow plenty of time to ensure you're getting the best of the best!
GENERALLY SPEAKING
Turn around depends on how many items you need and the time of year.
Generally from payment, it can take 3-4 weeks to complete an order.
BUSY PERIODS
There are certain times of year where demand is very high. Such as Te Matatini in February, Polyfest in March, and towards the end of each school term. Please contact us if you'd like to confirm current production times.
We can help you with the design. We encourage you to bring your ideas or designs to the table so your Kākahu is meaningful and unique to your kapa haka group.
DESIGN PROGRAMMES
We suggest using a program online called, stitchfiddle or an excel spreadsheet to prepare your design
PARI (BODICE)
100 stitches top to bottom, for the width we encourage your tohu (or centre piece) to be 150 stitches so 75 from middle on each side.
TĀTUA (BELT)
50 stitches Top to bottom.
TIPARE (HEADBAND)
19 Stitches Top to bottom
We're known most for the knitted parts of kākahu, however often construct the entire garments. Including:
- Pari, the upper bodice attached to dresses for wahine.
- Tīpare (Headbands)
- Tātua (Belts)
- Maro (short aprons attached under the Tātua)
- Korowai Bands
- There is also the options for plain Taniko knitted fabric.
WHAT WE DON'T MAKE
Piupiu.
Korowai real fur or feathered cloaks.
Poi {however we do supply poi cord in our online shop).
A few years ago we were quite limited in terms of smaller logos and curves.
We now utlise an embroidery machine, which allows us to overlay intricate detail.

We design for adults and tamariki of ALL sizes.
And we have a wide variety of colours available.

We have no minimums, however we do work by a tiered pricing structure.
So the more you have made at the same time - the more cost effective it will be.
REPEAT RUNS
Any time you need a new size or replacement item, we can put through a repeat run - without setup fees.
