Who we are

The Knit Affair Limited established Kapa Haka Makers in 2003 when the call for knitted kapa haka kākahu came knocking

In 2023 Brendon and Hayley Brownie purchased the business bringing renewed passion for the art.

They’re driven by the pride they feel, knowing their mahi helps support the cultural heritage of kapa haka and the community they serve.

1How long does it take?

GET IN EARLY
We encourage you to allow plenty of time to ensure you're getting the best of the best!

GENERALLY SPEAKING
Turn around depends on how many items you need and the time of year.
Generally from payment, it can take 3-4 weeks to complete an order.

BUSY PERIODS
There are certain times of year where demand is very high. Such as Te Matatini in February, Polyfest in March, and towards the end of each school term. Please contact us if you'd like to confirm current production times.

2What sizes can you provide?

We manufacture for adults and tamariki of ALL SIZES

If you don't know the exact sizing at the quoting stage, that's ok.

Just let us know the number of people and roughly what age range they are.

We can finalise the exact sizing for your rōpū later in the manufacturing process.

We have a wide variety of thread colours (below), and fabric choices available. Reach out and we'll work with you to create the perfect look for your Kapa Haka group.
4How do we create the design?

We can help you with the design. We encourage you to bring your ideas or designs to the table so your Kākahu is meaningful and unique to your kapa haka group.

DESIGN PROGRAMMES
We suggest using a program online called, stitchfiddle or an excel spreadsheet to prepare your design

19 Stitches Top to bottom

5What kinds of kākahu do you make?

We're known most for the knitted parts of kākahu, however often construct the entire garments. Including:

  • Pari, the upper bodice attached to dresses for wahine.
  • Tīpare (Headbands)
  • Tātua (Belts)
  • Maro (short aprons attached under the Tātua)
  • Korowai Bands
  • There is also the options for plain Taniko knitted fabric.

WHAT WE DON'T MAKE
Piupiu.
Korowai real fur or feathered cloaks.
Poi {however we do supply poi cord in our online shop).

6How detailed can the design be?

A few years ago we were quite limited in terms of smaller logos and curves.

We now utlise an embroidery machine, which allows us to overlay intricate detail.

IF YOU'RE UNSURE
Please email us a copy of your design. Where always happy to give out our advice.

7Is there a minimum I have to order?

We have no minimums, however we do work by a tiered pricing structure.
